Isolation and Acclimatization of Purchased Replacement Gilts
*Reviewed January 2022
Purchased replacement gilts pose a greater health risk to the breeding herd than internally reared gilts. For many herds, the management of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) constitutes the most problematic infectious agent to prevent or control prior to entry into the breeding herd. The continued success of the breeding herd depends on how this risk is managed. Management of purchased gilts will be reviewed. Description of the inoculation of oropharyngeal scrapings to prevent PRRS prior to entry into the breeding herd will be discussed.
